Endangered Black Cherry trees in the Eastern United States are part of a pilot seed-saving project using Airotronics MC360 Multifunction Relay Timers.
Currently in prototype testing, a mesh-and-tarp “funnel” is assembled under the tree to catch seeds as they fall. The seeds pass through the mesh top and slide down the tarp into a sturdy wire collecting box.
But what else falls in the forest? Leaves of course, and that’s where the MC360 Timer kicks in, running an array of 4 small fans for 10 seconds every 10 minutes, quickly blowing leaves off the mesh top.
If it proves effective, this low-maintenance solution may be adapted to clear leaves and debris (and critters) in seed collection programs for many species of cultivated trees.
